The history of websites and SEO (Search Engine Optimization) is deeply intertwined with the evolution of the internet itself. The journey began in 1991 when Tim Berners-Lee created the first website while working at CERN. This early site was a simple text-based page providing information about the World Wide Web project. As the internet expanded throughout the 1990s, the number of websites grew exponentially, creating a need for users to find relevant information quickly.

This growing demand led to the emergence of search engines, starting with basic tools like Archie and AltaVista, and later the more sophisticated Google, founded in 1998 by Larry Page and Sergey Brin. As search engines became central to navigating the web, the practice of SEO began to take shape. Initially, SEO strategies were rudimentary, focusing primarily on keyword density and meta tags to rank higher in search results.

However, as search engines evolved, so did SEO practices. The late 1990s and early 2000s saw the rise of more complex algorithms that considered factors like backlinks, site structure, and user experience. The introduction of Google’s PageRank algorithm in the late 1990s revolutionized SEO by emphasizing the importance of high-quality, authoritative links.

In the 2010s and beyond, SEO continued to advance with a focus on content quality, mobile optimization, and user intent. Modern SEO encompasses a range of strategies, including technical SEO, content marketing, and local SEO, reflecting the increasingly sophisticated algorithms of contemporary search engines and the ever-growing demand for a seamless user experience.
